Description:

1 x SABLE BULL

The Sable Antelope is of the Hippotragus tribe antelope. Only the Sable bulls display the shiny black coat whiles the female of the species and young, display a dark reddish brown. The belly and facial markings are of pure white in vivid contrast to the rest of his body. The Sable are a bit smaller than their relative the Roan but they are definitely one of the most majestic of all the antelope species.

Both sexes have horns and the horns of the Sable bull are magnificent and the longest of any African antelopes horns with the exception of the Kudu. Sable are very reliant on water and they prefer open and sparse woodland area in close proximity to the grasslandsSable are found in herds of up to 30 animals and even larger herds are not unheard of. Like the Roan, Sable bulls can be very territorial can be very aggressive. A wounded Sable will not hesitate to charge if wounded or cornered.

Conrad's Review

The .270 Win should be considered the absolute minimum calibre for hunting Sable & Roan. Rifles in the 30 calibre range with quality expanding bullets in the largest grain projectiles available should be the better choice. The 338 Magnums, 9.3x62 and the 375 H&H are excellent choices for hunting Sable and are good charge stoppers. A shot from the side calls for a high heart/lung shot directed straight up the foreleg about one third into the body. A neck or spinal shot should be placed in the middle of the neck where the neck joins the body.
